The Discovery of the Year

We all know the fact that dinosaurs were extinct because of a meteorite. However, we didn’t know which meteor until today. A group of scientists from the USA have discovered what could have been the last day of the dinosaurs on Earth. In addition, they have discovered a meteor that was encapsulated in amber and it could have crashed into Earth almost 66 million years ago.

It is more than 3,000 kilometers from the Chicxulub impact crater left by the asteroid that struck off the coast of Mexico, but the first discoveries made at the site convince DePalma that the site is home to thousands of well-preserved fish fossils that DePalma says were buried alive by sediment displaced when a huge mass of water from the asteroid’s impact moved up the inland seaway. Unlike tsunamis, which can take hours to reach land, these moving masses of water, known as seiche, arose instantaneously after the huge asteroid crashed into the sea.

An exceptionally preserved dinosaur leg with intact skin is another of the discoveries at the Tanis site. Very few fossils have been found and it is possible that it is the limb of a Thescelosaurus. The preservation of soft tissues such as skin suggests that its body did not have time to decompose before being buried in the sediment.
