Why haven’t we died yet?

In the last few months, a hoax has spread like wildfire among social media:

“NASA has set the date for the destruction of The Earth for the 6th May 2022.” Continuing reading this news, we can see that there’s a potentially dangerous asteroid which has a high probability of an asteroid crashing to earth. Why did people believe we were going to die?

The asteroid is 2009 FJ1 and it was discovered in 2009. NASA classified it in the high risk category of celestial objects. In this category you can find a huge variety of asteroids and celestial objects.

2009 FJ1 hasn’t been investigated enough to know the exact size of it. The diameter can be between 350 and 780 metres. In case is the smallest size it would be as big as Aon Centre (a Chicago skyscraper). However it could be as huge as the Empire State twice.

2009 FJ1 was classified in the high risk category since it was discovered. The probability of the asteroid crashing down to the Earth is 0.00074%, or one chance in 140,000. The probability the asteroid has to continue its way without touching the Earth is 99.99926%.

With this information we can assume that Earth’s end is not right now. However, if it was directed towards the earth, it would decompose in the atmosphere and small stones and fragments would fall.
